StoryTime episode in the amp
The Matchless Coldwater Canyon caught us off-guard. This little amp just stuns, stings and sears and plays in the big leagues. You won't ever guess that these tones are coming from a 20W package based around a pair of 6V6 power tubes.
The amp is a little screaming monster and its size is not a disadvantage at all. It has all the punch and low-end you could ever need ( in fact, for gainier sounds there is enough bass content with bass knob at 0.
It has no Achile's heel - it has wonderful cleans, edge of breakup, crunch, Drive and Lead tones - all in one simple channel that can go from great cleans up to hot-rodded plexi inspired tones.
It is Matchless' take ion the infamous EVH tones and it delivers in spades. It won't sound exactly like a 100W Super Lead plexi Marshall, but it is in no way inferior tonally . It holds together almost better than the Super Leads when cranked and it doesn't cave in in the brown-sound typical manner. If you want that sound, then you go for the Superlead. If you want a similar vibe, just a different take on the theme, this is a phenomenal option.
It is inherently bright, but miraculously takes pedals really well too, unlike a stock Super Lead with its 5000pF bright cap.
For rock, hard rock, as well as for genres requiring less gain, this is an amp that can do everything with style.
The set features 31 full captures that were recorded through the Matchless 4X12 ES412 cab with 30W Matchless branded speakers. The mics used were 2x Royer R121, a Beyerdynamic M160 and a Neumann U87. Please refer to the full list of included captures in the product photo section.
